  1. I was born in Lipari..to Giuseppe Imbruglia and Elvira DeFina ( from Filicudi)
emigrated to Australia in 1950 ( arrived Sydney 15 /01/1951)now live on Gold Coast ,Queensland. Retired Chartered Accountant / Financial Advisor ..speak Italian / Sicilian…would like to know more about origin of the Imbruglia family

    1. The Imbruglia family who lived on Lipari actually arrived from Milazzo, Sicily, early 1900s. I haven’t, however, researched the origin of the surname itself.

  2. Thank you Mr Russo this site is very interesting. I am researching our family tree who lived on the islands for generations. Marchese is the last name. I find it very interesting that there is only 1 marriage during the 1700s with the spelling Marchese and all others are spelled Marchisi. The one that is listed Marchese father spells the name Marchisi. All those after 1800s spell the name with the ese ending. Do you have any idea what would cause this change in spelling? Thanks Kim

    1. It depends which index you are referring to. For civil records, you can obtain a copy of the original record from the comune (Lipari, Leni, Malfa, or Santa Marina). The FamilySearch website also has copies but these are copies from either the Messina State Archives or the Tribunale. The church records that have been indexed are on the FamilySearch website, just search their catalogue for “Lipari”.
